By Toph…

“Down the Stretch,” the official drink of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup is phenomenal. It’s Grey Goose vodka, lemon-lime soda, cranberry juice and sweet and sour mix, which is then shaken a bit, then add blue curacao. Lastly, it’s garnished with 2 grapes, and a slice of lemon. I lost count after my 10th one, and someone where in between I became awesome.

The Saturday morning of the 25th Breeders’ Cup started out shaky. We arrived early only to find out that we wouldn’t be allowed into the owners tent in the infield. Diabla’s parents, owners of a few horses, were allowed, but there weren’t enough badges for the 4 of us (Diabla, her sister, brother-in-law and I). We would make the best of it, we decided, and headed over to the paddock to take a look at the horses in the first race. Santa Anita park wasn’t very full at this point, and I noticed Kenny Mayne and Hank Goldberg reporting live for ESPN. I went over and watched closely, and I’m pretty sure I was standing behind (who I think was) Bonnie Bernstein as she did a report from the Cup. As Hank was leaving the set, he signed a few autographs, and I shook his hand. Why not?

We made a few bets, and went to watch the 1st race at the finish line. Before the race started Dibs parents called and said come on over to the tent, they made it happen. Ladies and gentleman, it was on. We headed over to the private owners tent, and we’re suddenly rubbing elbows with horse racing elite. Here’s what’s going on in the owner’s tent – full bar, unlimited free drinks all day, breakfast, lunch, dinner, 2 plasmas, couches, and Kip and Buffy laughs (you know what I mean, Muwahaha…). It was awesome, and perfect for someone like me, who likes to pretend he’s rich, but is really not. I remember saying things like, “Diabla and I are still trying to decide which horse to make our first investment on (keep in mind, minimum investment is about $40K),” and, “Oh, yes, we missed going to the Derby this year, because I had a high powered deal I was trying to close… and, of course, I closed it. Mwahahaha, next year we’ll be there.” Needless to say, we were wasted.

However, on the track things weren’t going my way. I tried bets of win, place, show, exacta boxes, trifecta boxes, superfecta boxes, exactas, trifectas, daily doubles, hell I tried just betting the favorites to win, but nothing was coming through. No one was winning, well, until the greatest bet in the history of the world happened. So, because Dibs and I didn’t have a badge to get in and out of the tent, we had to wait for one of her parent’s before getting back in (or take the badge, but we were just going and betting at the same time). At this point, we’re at race 6, and about 12 “Down the Stretches” deep. Dibs and I are waiting for her Mom to make her bets. Her Mom turns around from the window, and says wait, I haven’t made my Superfecta bet, yet. Growing impatient, because we wanted to get back to the drink, I told her to just bet 7,4,3,2 (photo of our ticket). She opens her book, and I say, “NO! Just make the bet.” She does. A $1 Superfecta box is $24, because of how many ways the bet runs. The race starts, and we’re standing in front of the TV’s watching, drinks in hand. I shit you not, the race finished with 4,3,7,2. The random ass Superfecta turned into $3,024. Watch the race, and tell me how the fuck that happened (Click THIS to watch).

Shit just went nuts after this. Everyone, but Dibs and Dad-in-Law, is winning all over the place. I had a couple wins, but none as good as the last race. Ray always bets on 8, and asked me to throw some on 8 for him, which I did. But, as I was looking at the horse, Raven’s Pass, I really liked him. He looked good, and had run some good races. He wasn’t a long shot, but I thought he had a solid chance. So, I threw down a $5 win, place, show bet on him, which was $15. Wouldn’t you know the little guy won, and made me $150. Dibs, brother-in-law, before the race said to me, “I need to make 1 more bet. Give me a horse.” I immediately answered, “8.” He won.

Dibs, was sitting there with a superfecta pick of 5,3 and 9. She couldn’t figure out what horse to add to it. At this point Garrett Gomez, the jockey that rode the family’s horse Macho Again, had broken the record for most wins at the Breeders’ with 3. He was riding the 1 horse. When Dibs came back she heard be tell Bro-in-law to be the 8 horse, and asked me what I would have said. I told her I would have said 8. Wouldn’t you know, the Superfecta was 8,5,3,9. We missed out on $10,000 by that much.

Still, we celebrated the amazing day by going Derby for dinner. Let me tell you, they had the most wonderful bone-in filet I’ve ever had. It’s topped with Gorgonzola Cheese and crowned with Shitake mushroom port wine reduction, and it’s suck my balls amazing. If you look at the main photo, that’s exactly where we sat. Sitting behind us was Kurt Russell. Of course, they had to go to him to tell him that Overboard was awesome, and I told him he ruled in Miracle (despite not seeing it). We also met Jim Rome, who was hilarious. I walked past him at the bar, and did a double take. He said, “What’s up, man.” I said, “Whoa, Jim Rome…” And, he said, “Yeah, it’s me.”

After that, we kept drinking scotch and eating the shit out of steak and bananas fosters. I’m not gonna lie, I pretty much rule. I left the day up about $300.

You can check out photos HERE.

By Toph…

Finally, I get to talk about one of my favorite things, horse racing.

It’s crazy that it’s already been a year since we traveled to Monmouth Park to see the 2007 Breeders’ Cup challenge. Last year’s Cup was pretty extraordinary, as the family had two horses participating in the events, Irish Smoke and Dream Rush. This year there’s no horses, which isn’t a bad thing. We don’t have to hold ourselves to any sort of standards, as we’re not representing integrity and honor this year. Plus, without the stress, we’ll likely be drunk and shit throwing our money around. What’s more fun than that? West Point Thoroughbreds does have Awesome Gem participating in the events, so be sure to drop some cash on him.

Diabla and I will be heading down to Santa Anita Thursday afternoon to prepare for the weekend’s extravaganza. By that, I mean, we’ll be drinking and partying all weekend. Of course, I’ll write a large followup, and throw up some photos from the event. I’ll make sure to keep my book up-to-date with my bets, and the outcomes, so I can tell you how I did.

But, before that, let’s look at my early predictions on the Breeders’ Cup Classic. This, of course, is the final race of the weekend, and it has a lot of big names. I don’t have the gate numbers, and the odds, naturally, will be changing daily. But, this ought to give you some idea into how I’ll likely be betting.

As you know, Big Brown will not be participating, as he has suffered a career ending injury. This leaves the field wide open.

Horse : Odds

Curlin : 2/1

Go Between : 8/1

Duke of Marmalade : 10/1

Raven’s Pass : 7/1

Henrythenavigator : 6/1

Casino Drive : 8/1

Well Armed : 1/1

Tiago : 25/1

Colonel John : 8/1

Student Council : 16/1

Champs Elysees : 33/1

Pyro : 33/1

Smooth Air : 33/1

There are two alternates, Fairbanks and Awesome Gem. It’d be cool to see Awesome Gem entered into the race, but it’s unlikely.

I’d put $5 to win on Pyro at 33/1 and $5 to win on Champs Elyees 33/1. I feel like Pyro is always the long shot. One day, he’ll be due. And, Champs, well, it’s 33 to 1.

My pick to win it all, Curlin 2-1, I’d put $20 on to win. Curlin is pretty badass, and the defending Cup champion.

A $5 exacta on Curlin 2-1 and Casino Drive 8-1.

A $5 exacta box on Well Armed 1-1 and Curlin 2-1.

A $5 Exacta Box on Raven’s Pass 7-1 and Colonel John 8-1.

A $2 trifecta on Curlin 2-1, Well Armed 1-1, Colonel John 8-1.

Lastly, my $2 superfecta box pick Curlin 2-1, Well Armed 1-1, Casino Drive 8-1 and Henrythenavigator 8-1.

By Toph…

What a crazy weekend it turned out to be, and we’ll get into it soon, but first let’s talk Jessica Simpson. Yes, I’m still blaming all of this on Jessica Simpson. By this point I’m sure you’ve heard that Romo is out 4 weeks with a broken pinkie. Diabla woke me up early this morning, on my day off mind you, to share the news. About an hour later the texts came in from everyone I know across the country. Romo out 4 weeks. From New York, to Austin, to Dallas, to Fort Worth, to California texts messages came pouring in. Actually, I’m not sure if my friends thought I would never see the news, or if they just wanted to be first to tell me, but my cell phone will bill will take a hit for it. I must tell them I don’t have unlimited text messages, and to stop texting me with national news. Maybe this article will do. Diabla was pretty pumped that she was the one who broke the news to me.

So there you have it, my Romoboner has gone limp as shit. I couldn’t get it up at this point if I tried. No, not even with strippers.

Not that it deserves to be erect, because the Cowboys were god awful against the Cardinals. Sure, they battled back to force a disastrous overtime, in which Romo broke his pinkie on the first play, but, they had no business winning this game. They didn’t even belong on the same field, and I never thought I’d say that about Cowboys – Cardinals in my life. Yet, here we are, and the future doesn’t look good.

Final Final was a scene yesterday. Ryan and I almost got into a fight with an Eagles fan, which is always fun. And, since the Cowboys went into overtime, all eyes were on the game. Unfortunately, it didn’t end well for us, and the long terms effects might be worse.

The outlook:

The Cowboys should still be able to get passed the Rams next week. The Rams are awful, but did manage to beat Washington on Sunday. Next, they get Tampa at home in a game that they should have won. With Brad Johnson or Brooks Bollinger running the show, that might not happen. Lastly, the New York Giants in New York before the bye week. Not that I don’t have faith, but I don’t see them winning this game.

What does this mean? Well, the Cowboys are in deep shit. If Romo comes back and everything is normal, then the Cowboys should have a wildcard birth. If Romo comes back and everything is like they were on Sunday, well, so long Wade Phillips – that is if he doesn’t get fired before hand.

Oh, right, it’s all Jessica Simpson’s fault. The Simpson Curse continues. Seriously, go back to Carrie Underwood, Romo. You’ve got 4 weeks to sort it all out. Do the right thing.

________________________________

Not that I talk about College sports often, but wow, Texas – OU was fantastic. If you didn’t see it, find a way to watch it. It was incredible.

________________________________

Of course, I’ll start talking a lot more about my trip to LA at the end of the month, but I thought I’d go ahead and preview it now. On the 24th, Diabla and I are heading down South for the 25th running of the Breeder’s Cup. It’s already coming with sad news, though. Big Brown will not be racing now, and his amazing career is over. He injured himself training, and will never race again. But, could that open a spot for Macho Again? Let’s hope so. Sitting in owner’s box sounds a lot better than general admission, doesn’t it?
